One good way to care for your kidneys, especially if you have kidney disease or failure, is to eat foods and drink liquids that do not contain chemicals and nutrients that are bad for your kidneys. When your kidneys are already damaged, it is extremely important to not damage them any further. Instead, be kind to your kidneys and watch your diet.

The nutrients that you should cut down on are protein, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. This means that a person watching out for their kidneys should learn to eat less meat and fewer processed foods. The best way to ensure to cut down on these nutrients is to cook for yourself or your loved one as often as possible.

Some of the best foods for a kidney-friendly diet are red bell peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, red grapes, egg whites, fish, and olive oil. When in doubt, these foods will always be a safe choice. Davita provides a good digital cookbook full of recipes for those who are conscious of their kidneys. It can be found here

    .

When it comes to foods you should avoid on a kidney-friendly diet, limit any liquids that contain the nutrients you want to avoid, especially sodium and phosphates. When you eat chicken and pork, eat them fresh rather than as processed meats that often have high sodium levels. Cut back on meat and cheeses. Make the protein you eat count by choosing egg whites and fish often, which are low in phosphorus. Limit fats to healthy fats by avoiding shortening and animal fats when you can.

Being able to care for your body in a natural way, like by eating the right foods, is a great way to care for your body without the side effects that often come with medication. While medicines are sometimes necessary, it is best to choose natural options when they are available. Even if you need to take medication, a diet like this is a great way to accompany them for even better results. This type of diet can be followed whether you are wanting to simply take care of your kidneys or whether you have kidney disease already.

A deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause anemia, which can be a very serious problem. A lack of the right vitamins causes a body to produce fewer red blood cells. When the body is low on red blood cells, this can cause fatigue, lightheadedness, pale skin, bleeding gums, a sore and red tongue, stomach problems, and weight loss. If you notice these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, you should see a doctor.

Anemia from a B12 deficiency is most prevalent in people who have certain conditions that prevent them from absorbing B12. It is very uncommon that a person does not consume enough B12 because there is so much of it in meats, milk products, eggs, and other enriched foods. The causes of B12 deficiency anemia usually are pernicious anemia, part of the digestive tract being removed in a surgery, or other diseases that affect the way the body absorbs food. This anemia is not typically caused by a lack of intake of vitamin B12, but a lack of absorption. One of the causes, pernicious anemia, is an autoimmune disease that destroys the cells in the stomach which bond with B12 and allow for absorption.

In the case of pernicious anemia, the best ways to get sufficient B12 are to either have large doses of it or to get it into the bloodstream by bypassing the digestive system. There are nasal gels and injections that ensure that people with pernicious anemia can get enough B12.

Elderly people can be especially susceptible to B12 deficiencies because of lower absorption rates, a reduced intake of food, or a reduced variety of diet. Vegans and vegetarians are also more susceptible because B12 is only naturally found in animal products. Foods that have been enriched with B12, like certain breads and cereals, are other options for vegans and vegetarians.

Any form of vitamin B12 deficiency can be treated by taking B12 supplements. If the anemia is caused by dietary deficiencies, then a changing of diet should be enough or supplements could be taken. However, if the problem is absorption, then supplements will be the solution. Any dietary adjustments or supplements need to be followed for the rest of one’s life.

Anemia is not something to be taken lightly. If it is left alone, it will likely worsen. Because older people are more susceptible to anemia problems, the elderly especially should pay attention to any symptoms. If you think you or a loved one have anemia, check with a doctor for a diagnosis. If you suspect anemia, over the counter vitamins might be considered while you are waiting to get into the doctor. Extremely high B12 levels can be a problem, but supplements are usually safe to take even if you do not have low B12 levels.

A B12 deficiency is something that can be easy to fix, but it can cause major problems if it is left untreated, so it is best to pay attention to any symptoms and take action if you think you or a loved one has anemia.

Glaucoma is a disease that many people are aware of, but not many truly understand. There are two basic types of glaucoma: open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type, and it is a disease that shows little-to-no symptoms until permanent vision loss occurs. Angle-closure glaucoma presents with eye pain, headaches, and seeing halos around lights.

Individuals with open-angle glaucoma experience glaucoma very differently than those with angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma patients very rarely experience any pain or discomfort from the disease itself. The only thing they usually notice is a loss of vision. Even this is not often noticed until advanced stages because the peripheral vision is what is typically lost first. However, pain and discomfort can often come with glaucoma treatments.

Glaucoma treatments are usually successful at slowing or stopping the vision loss, especially if glaucoma is detected early. Individuals who are at a high risk of glaucoma because of eye injuries, near-sightedness, or family history and those who are over 65 should have regular eye exams to check for glaucoma. The disease may not be easily recognized by the patient, but eye pressure tests and vision tests can detect it.

People who are on glaucoma medications may experience dry or itchy eyes, blurred vision, stinging, or burning. However, these medications, as well as procedures, can prevent permanent damage to the ocular nerve, which is what causes the loss of vision. When glaucoma is left untreated, it will typically lead to blindness over time.

There is no cure for glaucoma, so anyone who has it will have it for life. Any treatments will need to be continued, even if the person feels like there is no need for it.

Being homebound can be scary for many people. You have to depend on your support network to provide the things for you that you need. While a strong support network is important to someone who is homebound, not all people have that. Those who do have support also sometimes need help from other areas to relieve the responsibilities of their caregivers or to fill in where their caregivers are not able to help. There are so many resources out there for the elderly, but sometimes it can be hard to find some of these services. Here is a list of some of what is offered in the Denver area:

      Meals on Wheels

. This service has been a blessing to many homebound seniors. They offer meal delivery at little to no cost. They also offer a safety check to make sure that the person they are delivering to is okay. To find a Meals on Wheels provider near you, follow this link:

      Seniors’ Resource Center

. This non-profit organization offers many services to the community including affordable transportation, free cleaning services, care managers, and adult day care. Because this is a non-profit, there are limits to their services, but they can still be extremely helpful. This is a link to a list of their services:

. There are many services that offer lending of medical equipment such as shower chairs, walkers, wheelchairs, and other such equipment. Some of these services are free while others require a small fee. However, any of these lending programs can save hundreds of dollars. The Assistance League of Denver offers one of these services:

It seems that with every year that goes by, people are becoming more and more conscious of what they eat. When you get on social media, you are likely to see at least a post or two about the latest research in health foods or a new diet. While all of this can be overwhelming, and not everything that is discovered or every diet that you see ends up being exactly right, there are some important things to learn from a more health-centered culture. What we eat does matter. The same is true for the elderly and homebound. Their diets can have a huge effect on their health and how well they feel from day to day.

However, it can be harder for someone who is homebound to eat healthy. Frozen meals and quick dinners are often the easiest things to prepare when you are crunched for time, and often the meal is prepared for only one or two, which can make it difficult to get all the necessary food groups into a single meal without making too much food. But making sure that your loved one eats a good diet should be very important. Here are a few ways you can make that happen:

Portion fruits and vegetables into small bags for snacks

. Because it can be hard to prepare all the necessary fruits and vegetables into meals when your schedule is tight, take a few minutes every few days to make ready-to-eat snacks and store them in the fridge. Remind your loved of the snacks and let any other caregivers know to encourage your loved one to snack on those.

      Buy healthy frozen meals

. Years ago, many frozen meals were not healthy, only convenient. This is something that has really changed recently. You can go into a frozen aisle and find tons of different choices of frozen meals, and many are healthy. You will probably even be able to find a few varieties that a picky eater would like as well. These will be good to have on hand when you don’t have time to cook up a meal.

Search online for easy healthy meals

. Spending just a little bit of time online can save you a lot of time in the long run if you search for quick meals that are also nutritious. You might also find some new favorite recipes as well.

Discourage too much sugar or snacking

. While you want to have some healthy snacks available, you should not encourage too much snacking. Eating out of boredom can be a tendency for people who have to do a lot of sitting, so instead encourage activities that keep the hands busy to try to offset this tendency. Too much sugar can also be a problem, so try to encourage healthy substitutes when possible. However, you probably will not want to cut out sugar entirely because your loved one likely be unappreciative of not having a say in what they can or cannot eat.

Make sure your loved one is eating enough

. While you want to make sure that your loved one is eating healthy foods and not eating too much, not eating enough is also something to look out for as well. This can be a tendency in the elderly, and it has obvious consequences. Keep an eye on how much your loved one eats at meals, and make sure that they are getting the nutrition they need.

There is a lot to keep track of when you are caring for someone else, but their diet should be something that is at the top of your list. A good diet can make a world of difference in the health of your loved one.

At Mile High Home Care, family is at the center of our business. We are established on family values and hold family bonds in high esteem. Emily Neuhold, the woman who started Mile High Home Care, has a big family of her own that means the world to her, so she understands the importance of caring for patients as if they’re family because to someone, they are family. For those clients who do not have close family members, we at Mile High Home Care also understand the importance of having people to count on.

We also highly value the families of our caregivers. Schedules are flexible for caregivers so that they can take care of their own family needs. Working for a company that values family relationships also causes the caregivers to value the family relationships of others, including their clients.

Family can be more than just the people who we are related to. Anyone who is always there for a person and wants to bring only good to that person is like family. We want to be an extension of your family while also encouraging your own family connections. If you are ever in need of help, just give us a call and someone will be there for you. Emily herself often goes and visits patients when they are in need of someone. It does not matter what time of day it is or whether it is the weekend, you can always count on Mile High Home Care to be there for you.

Our philosophy is that having strong relationships and people who are reliable and friendly helps the caregiving process. We support family caregivers and offer them help when they need it. Family caregivers are a crucial part of the caregiving process. They are highly valued and supported.

Not every client has a strong family network, but Mile High Home Care aims to care for each person in the same way we care for our own families.

Not everyone has a strong family network, but those who do benefit greatly from it. If you have a loved one who cannot fully care for themselves, you can play an instrumental part in helping them. Whether you live near or far from them, there are things you can do to support them both physically and emotionally.

      Help out the primary caregiver

. If you are not the primary caregiver, you can support whoever is. You can either help them by taking up any tasks or responsibilities you can, contributing financially, or even just by encouraging them. When you assist the primary caregiver, this indirectly helps your homebound loved one. They will benefit from a less stressed caregiver and from knowing that they have other family members who care.

      Send words of encouragement

. Anyone can do this, but this might be something that those who cannot help with tasks or contribute financially can easily do. Your loved one is likely struggling with the changes in their life, and it is always a good thing for them to know that they are cared for when they are facing difficult situations. A kind card or phone call can make their day.

Do chores or tasks that do not normally get done

. Ask your loved one what they would like or need done around the house that their primary caregiver does not have time for. They might like to be taken on a nice walk or need the ceiling fan cleaned, but whatever extra task that your loved one would like done, offer to do it occasionally.

Organize family get-togethers that your loved one can attend

. If your family member is one who enjoys spending time with family, this can be a very positive event for them.

Encourage other family members to pitch in any way they can

. Caring for a family member should be a family project. The more that family members help out, the easier the job is for each individual person and the more that your loved one will benefit from a strong family network.

How Home Care Can Be Utilized Along With Other Services

For many elderly and disabled people, home care is their primary care service. However, others need more care, such as home health care while there is another group of people who use less care, such as home delivery services and meal services. People at all levels of the care service spectrum can utilize home care to fit their needs.

One of the wonderful things about home care is that it is flexible. Home care includes many different services that can be tailored to individual needs. Different services can be added together and used as much or as little as needed. For a list of the services we provide, visit our page

    .

For people needing more care than the typical patient using home care, home health care is an excellent service that can be provided. However, having a health care professional can be expensive and there are many things that a nurse will not do when visiting a home. For any extra services that are needed, a personal care provider can come into the home separately and help the person with any additional needs such as cooking, cleaning, transportation, companionship, and medication reminders.

In the cases where less care is needed, home care can also be a valuable supplement. If a person receives meals on wheels, it is not likely that they will need someone to come in and cook for them. However, they might still need someone to help with cleaning or medication reminders. There are also many people who are mostly independent, but could benefit from a few of hours of help to keep on top of the housework each week.

Relative caregivers are extremely helpful, however, sometimes they too need a break. Respite care can be used in these cases so that a caregiver can take some time to themselves, take a trip, or catch up on work or family time.

Home care is extremely flexible in how it can be used. Any of these services can be provided as much or as little as they are needed. Whether a person needs a lot or only a little bit of care to remain in their own home, home care is a way to bridge the gap.

The Importance Of Home Care

One of the biggest fears of aging people is that they will be put in a nursing home. There is nothing wrong nursing homes, but they are a last measure for most. In general, people prefer to live in their own homes. Home care allows those who are not fully able to care for themselves to stay at home longer. It helps them retain a certain level of autonomy and independence while receiving additional companionship and personalized care. It also reduces stress and strain on them and their family members while freeing up time and energy so that they can do the things that make life truly enjoyable. One-on-one attention from a caregiver can help the elderly recover faster from illnesses or injuries. Assisted home care is also cost-effective compared to other forms of care. It provides peace of mind to family members who may not be able to provide full-time care themselves.

Home care typically offers services such as homemaking, cooking, cleaning, help bathing, dressing, and eating, as well as medication reminders and transportation. Some people are able to take care of their loved ones in these regards, but there are other people who have no one they know who can provide the level of care that they need. Home care provides a second option for those people who might otherwise have to leave their home.

It is also typically less expensive for a person to stay at home and receive home care services than living in a nursing home or assisted living facility. This is a huge help for the millions of older Americans and their families who cannot afford the large expenses that nursing homes and assisted living facilities require.

Around 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day, and that number is expected to hold for the next 20 years. At this rate, our ever-growing elderly population will require more care than ever. The home care business is helping to bridge the gap between the people needing care and the care providers. Unlike facilities, home care is flexible and has a great ability to grow with the increasing elderly population.

In the upcoming years, home care will be needed more than ever. The services care providers offer can make a large difference for the elderly who need care but do not wish to live in a facility. This is good news for both those needing care and the businesses that provide it.

Home care and home health care do not sound very different, but they certainly are. Home care is also known as non-medical home care; this name can offer insight into the important distinction between home care and home health care. Home care is usually provided by a certified agency that employs non-medical professionals. The caregivers are able to offer many services, but none of them include skilled medical care. A home health agency provides skilled medical care usually through nurses and occupational therapists.

Home care services typically include homemaking, cooking and delivering meals, bed and wheelchair transfers, medication reminders, transportation, travel companion services, companion care, respite care, and personal care such as help with bathing, dressing, and eating. Home health care services can include taking blood pressure, checking vitals, dressing wounds, and other medical care.

Home care is intended to help people perform daily tasks that they are not able to do alone while home health care is often intended to help patients recover at home or remain at home when they might otherwise need to be in a hospital or nursing home. As a way to keep a person out of a nursing home or as a way to reduce hospitalization, both home care and home health care are useful.

Both forms of care can be used on a short-term or long-term basis, depending on the needs of the individual requiring care. Home care is usually the less expensive of the two, but this is because home health care requires more skilled care providers.

Home health care and home care can also be used jointly. A person can have both a home health care professional visit them for their medical needs and a home care provider visit them for their daily living needs. For some, using both home care and home health care is the best option.

If you are not the primary caregiver for a loved one who is homebound, there are many things you can do to help with the care. Caregivers are often overworked because of family, jobs, and caregiving. Many caregivers do most of the work on their own. As someone who is not a primary caregiver, there is a lot you can do to help out and relieve some of the stress off of the caregiver.

Offer to stay with your elderly family member for a few hours at a time

. Offering to take over for a few hours while the caregiver can run errands, spend time with family, or just relax is often one of the most-needed things that you can do. If you use some of that time to visit with your loved one and do some chores that need to be done, that will really make the caregiver’s day.

Cook meals to bring to your elderly family member or the caregiver’s family

. Cooking is something that can be done in the comfort of your own home and in your own kitchen; you will just need to make sure that the meals get delivered somehow. This can make a big difference when a caregiver has little time to cook in the first place. A good meal will also be sure to please anyone else who eats it.

Offer to help out when a caregiver is wanting to go on vacation

. It can be very difficult for caregivers to get away. When they are wanting to visit family across the country or just get a break, be the person to jump in and offer to cover their caregiving duties for them.

Help the caregiver find time to relax

. Arranging things so that the caregiver can get a massage, go see a movie, or do whatever they like to do to relax can be a huge help. It’s even better if you can provide a gift card for them to go do these activities.

      Show your appreciation

. Write a thank you note and get them a gift every now and then. You might not be able to help your loved one as much as they can, but show them that you appreciate all they do for your family member.

      Ask how you can help

. Sometimes, one of the simplest things to do is to ask how you can help. Each caregiver has specific needs, and there is likely something that would help a certain person more than another thing would.

Caregivers put a lot into what they do, but their jobs can be even harder when they don’t have support from other family members. When you show your support, show your appreciation, and help out, it can make a caregiver’s job much easier.

Even though the holiday season is known as a joyous one, many of us are well-aware that it is not a happy time for everyone. The elderly tend to have an especially hard time during the holidays. Many different factors can make the holidays hard on those who are older. Missing loved ones who are gone is a difficult thing for many to deal with during the holidays. Not being able to fully participate in activities, losing some holiday traditions, not being able to help out with cooking and planning, and being overwhelmed by all of the festivities are all also aspects that can make the holidays difficult for the elderly. As a caregiver or family member, there are many things you can do to make the holidays easier on your loved one.

      Understand their grief and anxieties

. Take time to be aware of what might be causing them to be sad or anxious during this time. When you can tell that their mood is different, remind yourself of why and act with compassion towards them.

Spend some time talking to them and listening as well

. If your loved one is the kind of person who generally likes to talk about things like this, sit down with them and ask them about how they are feeling. Even if you only spend a little bit of time listening to them, it can make them feel better and can help you understand where they are coming from.

Decorate their home for the holidays

. If your loved one is festive, decorate the house so that they can enjoy the season. Because they spend most of their time at home, they might feel as if they’re missing out on the spirit of the holidays. Do what you can to bring some of that into their own home.

Try to keep their traditions alive or bring back old ones

. Sometimes the elderly feel sad about traditions that are no longer upheld. Try not to let family traditions fade, and if you spend some time talking to them and find that they are missing an old tradition, do what you can to bring it back. This can be a sure way to brighten their season.

Include them in as many holiday activities as you can

. Their inability to get out very much can put a damper on their mood, and missing out on holiday activities, especially family ones, can make someone who is homebound sad during the holidays. Together with family, try to find as many ways to include your loved one in the activities, even if it means adjusting the activity so that everyone can attend.

Be sure to involve the whole family

. Co-ordinate with other family members to visit and host the elderly family member at their events. Spending plenty of time with family can make the season a happier one for those who are elderly. This might also be a prime time to take advantage of a little extra help if your family members happen to be more inclined to pitch in during the holidays.

Do what you can to connect with far away family and friends

. Help your loved one to reach out to family members who live far away. If a distant family member can visit, it might be just the gift your loved one was hoping for during the holiday season.

      Don’t overwhelm them

. Make time for quietness in the midst of the busy season. Not everyone enjoys all the hustle and bustle of the holidays. If the house constantly has guests coming in and out or if there are multiple events each week, set some time aside for your loved one to get a little bit of peace and quiet.

If they are very depressed, help them get the appropriate care

. If you can tell that your loved one has more than just the blues, you might consider getting them to see a therapist or psychiatrist.

If you are not a caregiver, help out as much as you can to relieve some of the workload

. Caregivers are always so busy, and the holidays only magnify that. If you are going to be around more during the holidays, help out where you can so that the caregiver can get a break. They will greatly appreciate it during this busy time.

When caring for your loved one, one of the most difficult things is to keep them active. When a person is homebound, this can seem to be an almost impossible task. However, even though it is something that can be easily pushed to the side because of the busyness of caring for your loved one, it is something that is extremely important to both the mental and physical health of your loved one. Both mental and physical activity are extremely important. There are many ways you can try to integrate activity into your daily schedule.

Maintain any active tasks you can

. If your loved one is able to cook, garden, walk around, or do any other physical tasks, encourage them as much as possible. Even if these tasks are difficult, provide as much help as you can, and do not let your loved one give up on them easily. Maintaining any physical activity, as long as there is not a risk of getting hurt, is one of the simplest ways to keep your loved one active. Some of these tasks might also take some of the workload off of you and help your loved one to keep some of their independence.

Encourage puzzles, reading, and other mental tasks

. Activities that exercise the brain should be a part of a daily routine. These will not usually require much additional help from the caregiver, and they are crucial to keeping a sharp mind and fighting dementia. Many of these activities are usually fun for the homebound person as well.

Find types of exercises your loved one can do

. If walking around the house or lifting a five-pound weight while sitting is something that your loved one is capable of doing, this could make a huge difference in their health. A caregiver who makes a concerted effort to creatively find exercises that a homebound person can do will immensely improve the health of the homebound person.

As physical capabilities decrease, it can become easy to cease physical activities. However, keeping active is too important to let fall by the wayside.

While running their own business is a dream for many, it often is not as ideal as most people think. Running a business takes long hours, dedication, perseverance, and so much more. Mile High Home Care started out as an idea several years ago. About this time last year, in 2016, it became a plan. Hours upon hours were spent filling out forms, preparing the offices, and trying to find the right staff. There were ups and downs, high points and low points. However, the plan was stuck to, and early this year, it became a reality. It was not an easy task, but the philosophy of providing good client care was enough to keep us going and to cause those who valued that philosophy to make it happen.

The idea of providing excellent care to our clients is great, but there is so much more than that to our business. Forming relationships with people, seeing smiles on faces when a day is brightened, or even just seeing a frown fade a little are all things that keep us going. Our caregivers and office staff care about the impact that we make on our clients’ lives. Each individual’s day that is improved is a win for us.

Not only do we want to make life easier for our clients, but we also like to give our clients options. Not every homecare agency in the area is dedicated to making client care a great experience. We set out to make sure that the people in our local area, in the Denver area, have an option for a company that puts client care above all else. You have the ability to choose who you want to entrust your care to. We hope you choose us.

We also want to provide reliability and stability in our clients’ lives. You should be able to trust that you will be taken care of, and that is what we aim to do. Smiles are wonderful, but we shoot for bigger goals than that. We run this agency so that you can trust that you will always have someone there for you when you need it. Our clients are always our highest priority.

This is why we do what we do. We hope that you can see it in the way we run our business and the way that our caregivers act. You and your loved ones should feel as though you have been cared for at the highest level.

How to Decide Whether or Not to Get a Pet for Your Loved One

There is a lot of research that shows that pets can have great effects on mental and physical health. Pets can bring a sense of calm and happiness to the people around them. If you are considering getting a pet for your loved one, these are the things you should consider.

The benefits are definitely something you want to look into. If your loved one is lonely, depressed, or just seems like they could use the companionship, a pet might be a benefit to them.

You should think about whether or not they will be able to care for the pet. Pets need attention and care as well. If your loved one has trouble caring for themselves, they may need extra help to care for the pet. Before you get one for them, make sure that there are plans in place for the care of the pet.

Consider the personality of the pet. After deciding that your loved one will positively benefit from the pet and that the pet will be well cared for, only get them a pet that will do well with your loved one. For the sake of the pet as well as your loved one, try your best to find a good match. This will likely be a calm, older (but not too old) pet.

Keep the cost in mind. Pets cost money, so make sure that there is room in the budget for this. You should also figure in the possibility of medical expenses, especially if the pet is an older one.

Make sure the pet is healthy. If your loved one has a weakened immune system, you do not want a pet around them that might make them sick. Before bringing the pet into the house, check that it does not have any diseases that will spread to its owner.

Determine what will happen to the pet if your loved one is no longer able to take care of it. If it is likely that the pet will outlive its owner, or if your loved one might have to go to a nursing home or facility where pets are not allowed, you should make plans for who will look after the animal. This is something that really needs to be thought through for an elderly owner.

Look into organizations that specialize in helping the elderly adopt pets. You will likely get a reduced adoption rate, and they are much more likely to be able to help you pick out the right pet for your loved one.

If owning a pet is not an option for your family member, find alternative ways for them to benefit from animal companionship. You might bring your pet or another family member’s pet over for visits. You could also look into local therapy dog organizations and take your loved one to one of their events. These types of encounters could bring some animal companionship into their lives if owning a pet is not an option.

Pets can be a huge benefit to homebound people, but they are also quite a responsibility. When you are considering getting a pet for your loved one, you should make sure that it is a decision that both you and they take very seriously. However, if you ultimately decide to get a pet for them, it is something that will surely brighten their days and boost their mood and health.

Our blog post goes over the challenges we face when caring for loved ones who are elderly or disabled, and some of the tips we can share to help

It is not an uncommon scenario to have an aging family member to take care of. Many people struggle with how to balance helping these family members and taking care of themselves and their own family as well. Caring for a family member can be very rewarding in many ways. You are showing that person love and appreciation, you are giving back to them after all they have done for you, and you are able to be there for them during a difficult phase in life. However, many problems also arise. These are some of the most common difficulties of having a family member who needs to be taken care of:

    1)

      Time –

Our lives are already busy enough, but making the time to care for a family member can make this even more difficult. Often, other parts of life get put to the side in order to make time to help a loved one. Trying to make time for everything, especially children, spouses, and jobs, can feel nearly impossible. It is very important to also make sure you, as a caregiver, make time to take care of yourself as well.

    2)

      Finances

     – Trying to keep up with one person’s finances is difficult enough, but trying to take care of someone else’s adds a whole other layer of difficulty. Medical bills and lack of sufficient income for the person being taken care of can often be a huge problem as well. Medicare can help alleviate some of the burden, but the paperwork that comes with it can also be a strain on the situation.

    3)

      Worry –

Whenever you are not able to be at home with your loved one, you always worry if they are doing alright. Even when you are around, if their medical condition is not good, there is a huge worry about how they are holding up. Worry for them never seems to go away, even when you try to relax.

    4)

      Strained Relationships –

When you spend too much time with anyone, situations can become tense. However, this seems to often be even more of a problem when you are in a caregiver position. Your relative can become irritable because they can no longer do certain things for themselves or because they are in pain. Not getting along makes an already tough situation even harder.

    5)

      Living Situations

    – When it comes to caring for a loved one, sometimes the easiest thing is to live together so you can better take care of them. This can be difficult, though. If you have a family, it makes the most sense for your relative to move in with you, but it is hard for them to leave a place that has been home for a long time. Usually, neither party really wants to leave their own home. While this problem is not always the case, for those that it does occur to, it leaves a very difficult choice.

    6)

      Distance –

If you do not live near a loved one who needs care, it is hard to choose whether or not you need to move closer. If you do choose to, you have to root up your current life. If you choose not to, there is usually guilt because you feel like you need to be there. You also have to figure out how to help out the best way you can from a distance, which can be a challenge.

    7)

      Ability

    – Most people are not adequately trained to care for someone with medical issues. Nurses can teach you how to do certain things to help with every day care, but, at least at the beginning, you will feel like you are not qualified to be caring for your loved one. This takes some getting used to in order to be able to confidently care for your relative.

    8)

      Lack of Support

    – In many families with aging relatives, the care and support of the relative falls on the shoulders of one person. This person can often feel overwhelmed by all the responsibility and can feel like they do not have a good support system. Support is important to be able to balance the care of a loved one with all the other facets of life. The lack of it can make a person feel like they are only barely getting by.

If you are experiencing any of these, you are not alone. Caregiving for an aging person is not easy, but in the end, you will be glad you were able to provide much needed care for your loved one.

As you become a caregiver for an elderly family member, it can become easy to start to take over the care for everything they do. If you do some things, sometimes it seems easier to just do others as well. However, it is important to remember that your family member has lost the ability to care for themselves in the way they have been doing for years and years. To keep them from feeling like they have lost all of their independence all at once, it is important to be aware of what you do for them and what they can do on their own.

Pay careful attention to the tasks they are able to do

. There will be certain things that your loved one will absolutely not be able to do anymore. These are the tasks you should take over completely. However, if your elderly family member is capable of doing some things, like cooking, folding laundry, or keeping track of when they need to take their medication, be sure to let them do that if they are willing to. Even feeling like they are somewhat self-sufficient can make a huge difference in how they adjust to their new lifestyle. As a caregiver, this can also take some of the stress off of you.

Make adjustments so that they can still do things they love

. If you need to assist a little with a task or hobby that they enjoy doing, do what you can. If your loved one loves baking but can no longer stand in the kitchen to do it, prepare the ingredients for them and have them mix everything in a bowl at a table. Make sure that they give you the instructions on how to do the rest of the preparation so that it is made the way they would make it. If they enjoy puzzles but cannot stand up and reach across the table to put some in place, sit with them and help where you can. Talk with them and find ways that they can still do what they used to enjoy doing.

Do things the way they are used to them being done

. It can be easy to come in and clean, cook, and do everything else the way you do it in your own home. However, this can make an already difficult adjustment even harder for them. Try letting your loved one tell you how they like things done, and make an effort to do that. This can make them feel as if they have not completely lost all control over their lives. If they are especially particular, there may need to be some compromises made, but for the most part, this can be a vital step in keeping them feeling somewhat independent.

Make adjustments to their home to make life easier for them

. Make their own home as accessible to them as possible. Get a caddy so that things they might need throughout the day are within their reach. Install bars in the bathroom so that they need less help going there. Watch them throughout the day, and find out what can be moved or changed so that they do not have to ask for help constantly.

Find new ways they can do things on their own

. Technology can be a huge help in this department. Someone who is homebound will almost definitely not be able to go to the grocery store and pick out their own items, but they can shop online and get exactly what they want and either have it delivered or have someone else pick it up. Installing lights around the house that can be controlled remotely through a tablet or phone could also be handy so that they can function easier at night. Be creative, and find some new ways of doing things that might help your loved one feel more independent.

Being conscious of how your loved one feels and the changes that they are going through is an important step in making sure that they still have a sense of independence. There is not a single way of doing things that works for all homebound people, but you know your loved one and what their needs might be, so implementing what might work for them could really help them feel as if they still have some control over their own lives.

Read through our blog to learn more about how you can better prepare your loved ones who are elderly or disabled for disasters in the future

The recent disasters of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma have the whole nation reeling from their effects. Disasters are always something that we cannot seem to plan enough for. One of the groups of people most affected by the storms are the elderly and disabled. There were problems with trying to evacuate them, and many were harmed because of this.

A hurricane might not be an immediate worry for those in the Denver area, but natural disasters can hit anywhere, including fires, tornados, and blizzards. Everyone needs to have a plan for what to do in a dangerous situation, and the elderly and disabled need to even more so. Here are some tips about how to prepare for a disaster because preparation can help immensely if one arises.

1. The most important thing is to make sure that you are prepared with enough water, flashlights, medical equipment and supplies, blankets, and non-perishable food to last for a few days.

2. Because getting to a safe place may take longer for an elderly or disabled person, keeping track of weather conditions ahead of time is important. If conditions look bad, it is better to be safe than sorry and head to a secure place rather than trying to wait anything out.

3. Emergency cash is also something that could be useful if conditions cause difficult access to ATMs or banks.

4. Always have a list of emergency contacts available and in an easy place for someone else to find. You never know what might happen, and if someone needs to get ahold of your emergency contact when you are not able to, they should not have to look too hard to find it.

5. Have places set up for you to go if conditions make it necessary. In the case of a tornado, have a shelter you can go to. If you need to evacuate, have a planned place to evacuate to.

6. Have a few people who are nearby and who know to help you immediately if a disaster makes it necessary. Make sure they know your disaster plan and will be ready to help you when the need arises.

7. If there are any hard to move medical devices you need, have a plan for how you will move them or how you will get by if you cannot. It might be best to discuss disaster plans with your doctor if you have this problem.

The most important thing is to have a plan ready. Go over every scenario you can think of and plan for that as well. It is never a bad idea to be over-prepared, and it is especially important for those who will have a harder time reacting to disasters.

Taking Care of Yourself as a Caregiver

It is so easy for a caregiver to get so caught up in taking care of others that self-care falls through the cracks. The truth is that when someone is not taking good care of themselves, it becomes difficult to take care of others. A stressed caregiver is not much of a help to anyone. As a caregiver, it is important that you take at least a few hours out of the week to make sure that you get the care you need. You want to do your best so that both you and your loved ones are well taken care of.

      Remember what you enjoy doing

. Take at least a little bit of time to do what you like to do. Even if it is as simple as watching television or as elaborate as travelling, make sure to set a little bit of time aside to do that. You will feel more refreshed and fulfilled if you do not feel as if your caretaking duties leave no time for what you love.

Socialize outside of your caretaking duties

. Having conversations with your friends and family that are not about the person you care for can be a good recharge for you. Get caught up with people who you do not talk with much anymore, and nurture those relationships that are important to you. You will find yourself less impatient with the one you care for, and you will be able to give your mind a break from your duties. This one is a win-win.

Let someone else care for you for a change

. Receiving a nice shoulder rub from a partner or going to get a pedicure can be extremely satisfying when you spend all day being the one taking care of others. You deserve a little attention as well. Make some time to see that your needs are being taken care of. If you get sore muscles because of your duties or if you cannot stand how unkempt your hair has gotten, get it fixed. When you feel as if you are cared for, it is much easier to care for others.

      Clear your mind

. It is always important to give your mind a break from all your worries. Find a way to rest your brain for a little bit. Yoga, meditation, or even just zoning out to the television, whatever way that you find works for you, be sure to do it on a regular basis. Too much worry can take a toll on our bodies and emotional health, so it is important to minimize that when we can.

      Get enough exercise

. Getting exercise can help you sleep better at night, keep you from gaining unwanted weight, and make you feel better overall. Try to find any way to squeeze a little exercise into your busy schedule. It is even better if you manage to find a type of exercise that you enjoy doing or find to be relaxing.

      Eat well

. We all know that even though it is quick and easy to run through the drive-through to get food, that kind of food is not typically what will make you feel good. Too much of any type of food that is too greasy, too high-calorie, or has too much fat, will drag your body down. Everything should be done in moderation, so make sure you eat some food that’s good for you whenever you get the chance. The extra energy and the healthy feeling should make it easier for you to get through the day.

      Connect with other caregivers

. Part of taking care of yourself also includes making sure that you feel related to. If you do not have anyone around you who can understand what it is like to be a caregiver, try to find a new friend or two who do understand. It can feel so freeing to have someone who sympathizes with the challenges of what you do. They might also have some tips to share with you to make your life easier.

Get all the help you can

. Often, one person is not capable of doing everything. If you are able to get family members to chip in, that is great. This is where caregivers from a home care agency can also help out. They come to take over some of the responsibilities when you cannot do it all. If you have a job, a family that also needs to be cared for, or both, caregivers from an agency can be a huge help to you to take some of the burden off.

Your job of caring for a loved one is so important and very rewarding in itself, but you cannot forget to make sure that you take care of yourself along the way. It probably will not be possible keep up with all of these all the time, but you will certainly benefit if you try to do at least some of them consistently. Find out what works best for you.

Fall is upon us. For many people, it means that it is time for pumpkin spiced lattes and enjoying the cooling weather. There are many ways that elderly people will be able to enjoy the changing season as well. Here are some of the top ways to bring some of the fall fun to them:

      Decorate the house for fall

. A warm cozy house decorated with fall colors and decorations can bring autumnal cheer to anyone. A nice fall scent can also make the home feel welcoming and relaxing. This is something that is very helpful for people who are especially fond of fall. The festive surroundings might also help to fight off seasonal blues.

      Make apple cider

. Making this tasty fall treat can bring back fond memories of the season. It has been a fun way to welcome the changing of the seasons for years, and most people will enjoy the warm drink and the festive smell that will fill the house along with it.

Curl up with a good book in front of a fire

. There are few better things to do on a chilly day than to sit by a fire and read a favorite book. Pick an old one that has not been read in a while or one that has been on the reading list. Either way, it is sure to be a great way to spend an afternoon.

      Carve a pumpkin

. There is never an age limit on pumpkin carving. Pick out a good pumpkin, and whether the carver is skilled or a novice, it will be a good way to celebrate the season. Roasting the seeds is a possible bonus activity that is sure to please.

      Knit for colder weather

. Whether learning to knit or picking up the old needles, this is a great, easy activity to not only pass the cool days, but it is also a way to prepare for the cold weather that will soon follow. A new blanket, scarf, or sweater will be a welcome addition during the late fall and winter months.

      Prepare for trick or treaters

. For those who enjoy children, getting ready to receive trick or treaters on Halloween is always fun. Decorate the front porch or the yard, and get some candy together. On Halloween, hand out the candy and enjoy making kids smile.

      Do a fall themed puzzle

. If fall foliage is a favorite, a fall themed puzzle is a way to enjoy the season. Set aside an afternoon or a day or two, and put together the beautiful yellow, orange, and red themed picture.

Go for a drive to enjoy the changing colors

. This is a great activity that involves getting out of the house. Bring along a thermos of apple cider or another favorite warm drink, and take a drive through the neighborhood or up to the mountains to see the gorgeous scenery.

Any of these should brighten your loved one’s day and break the monotony that is so easy to get into. The upcoming seasons and holidays are an ideal time to bring some change into the daily schedule.

What Home Health Caregivers Do

In this blog we go over the tasks that our home health caregivers perform while working with you and your loved ones

Having a stranger coming into your home can be intimidating for some. Questions like “What will it be like?”, “What will they do?”, and “What do I do?” might be at the top of your mind. If you are unsure of what having a caregiver in your home will be like, it is completely understandable. It is a new situation for many and can be outside of your comfort zone. Here is a rundown of what you might expect to help you prepare for having a caregiver.

A caregiver visits a home for three main reasons: to keep the client safe and healthy, to help with tasks that need to be done, and to make life easier on the client and the family. Caregivers are there to help and to be a positive influence in any home they go into. They are not meant to be a burden or nuisance.

Caregivers are also there to be companions as well. When they visit a client, they will check up on how the client is doing and how their day is going. They will then attend to any needs there are. Cooking and cleaning are some typical needs. For people who need help remembering when to take their medication, a caregiver will do that as well. If you need something to be picked up from the store, that is another task that a caregiver might do. Be prepared to enjoy some home cooked meals, a nice, clean house, and an empty to-do list after your caregiver comes to visit.

When everything that needs to be done has been attended to, a caregiver will also visit with a client. They are not there to just get in and get out (unless a client prefers that). They are in a client’s home on a regular basis, so they will get to know that person and form a relationship with them. You will not feel lonely when a caregiver is around.

If you are ever in an uncomfortable situation with a caregiver, it is always best to talk with them and with the management so that you can work out a routine that works for you. Your comfort and safety is always the highest priority.

The point of having a caregiver is to make staying comfortable at home an option for people who are unable to take care of everything that needs to be done themselves. Caregivers help to make the home a happy and relaxing place.

When to Choose Home Health Care

Most people want to live at home for as long as they can, but sometimes medical or physical conditions make that difficult. Often, family members would like to be able to take care of their loved ones, but jobs and families are important as well. Home care is a viable option that can make living at home possible for those who are elderly or cannot take care of themselves.

People are typically most comfortable their own home, and home care aims to allow people to stay there as long as possible. Home care makes it easier on the person needing help and their family members. These services can sometimes be at least partially covered by Medicaid, insurance, or grants as well.

Mile High Home Care offers many different services that can be tailored to individual needs. Personal Care Providers can clean, do laundry, provide transportation, help with bathing, offer companionship and more. For people who need more care, CNAs can visit and provide other services as well.

Nursing homes are often chosen for those who are unable to take care of themselves, but they are not always the best option. If a person does not need round the clock care and is still able to live safely in a house, home care is a better option. The ability to live in their own home is invaluable to most people. Care providers ensure a friendly and safe environment to make it the best experience for client.

Care providers come into the client’s home usually for a few hours and do chores and visit with the client. These visits can be the high point of the client’s day. Depending on needs, they will do whatever they can to make the day easier for the client. They make sure that everything is in order and that the client is well taken care of before they leave.

At Mile High Home Care, our care providers are screened and thoroughly trained. We make sure that the highest level of care is provided, which includes friendly staff who are reliable. Before considering nursing homes, set up a free consultation with a manager to see if home care would be a better option. Call 303-429-5805.

Mile High Home Care started out as a dream for Emily Neuhold. When she was young and in girl scouts, she would visit nursing homes as one of her projects. The wisdom and life stories of the elderly fascinated her. Ever since then, she has worked with the elderly through volunteering her time or as a part of her work. Before starting Mile High Home Care, she had worked in home health care for years and wanted to start her own company. Creating a great experience for both those receiving home care and the caregivers was a desire of hers.

The company slogan is “Providing care to your loved ones at the highest level.” The best care possible is the idea that started Mile High Home Care. Emily worked for months to get the company started. Once it was up and running, she made sure that clients were being treated well. She even often visited clients herself and still does.

Mile High Home Care is run with family values in mind. It was started by a woman who spent years going into people’s homes and caring for them. She would sit and talk with them; she would get to know them and form relationships with them. She knows home care well and is dedicated to upholding standards so that clients are treated well and are happy. The company is built on a passion for client care.

Denver is the home of Mile High Home Care, and clients from all over the area are covered. Caregivers visit people all over the Denver metro area and in the surrounding cities as well. The city of Denver is where the office is located, but services are offered to a much wider area. Mile High Home Care takes pride in its location; the name itself refers to the city’s nickname. Emily has lived in the Denver area for nine years now and considers it her home. The business is dedicated to the community and its residents.

At Mile High Home Care, we are constantly looking for new clients and new caregivers to join the team. We try to find good matches between those needing care and those providing it to offer the best experience possible. The staff at Mile High Home Care are friendly and welcoming. They reflect the principles of the business.

A lot of passion and hard work went into getting the business running, and it is all the better because of it. The goal is to help Colorado residents live safely and comfortably in their own homes. Mile High Home Care has not been around long, but it is already on its way to accomplishing that goal.
